Secure server certificate (webcert) purchase procedure

We sell two basic digital certificate types, QuickSSL and True BusinessID, the order process is slightly different for each of these. Ther order process is split up into 4 basic stages:

  1. Gather certificate information.
  2. Gather contact information.
  3. Payment.
  4. Certificate issue.

Gather certificate information

You will have to select your certificate type from our initial order form, for QuickSSL orders this will also involve entering the domain name of the web site to be authenticated. After the initial certificate selection you will be asked to:

  • Select the server type that will use the certificate. You can find more information on supported web servers here.
  • Enter the certificate signing request (CSR) for your website. More information on obtaining a CSR for the various server types can be found here.
  • Select a user name and password, this will be used to access our member area where you will be able to check on the status of your certificate.
  • QuickSSL orders also have to select an email address that will be used to authenticate the certificate. This must be a working email address.
  • True BusinessID ordersmay also submit an optional DUNS number. If you have one of these it will speed up the authentication process and you will not have to provide any company authentication documents.

Gather contact information

After completing the above, you will be asked to submit 3 sets of contact information, the admin contact, the billing contact and the technical contact. The admin contact will only be used if there is some problem with the order process, the billing contact will be used for the invoice which will be sent via email and the technical contact will be issued the certificate.

True BusinessID orders will also have to provide us with an organisation contact. This is the organisation that will be authenticated and checked for ownership of the domain name.

Payment

Once you have completed the above you will be asked to confirm the order and proceed to our payment options page. We have a number of popular payment options for which you can find more information here. Upon payment confirmation your order will be actioned and an invoice sent by email to the billing contact.

Certificate issue

If the authentication process is successfull, the digital certificate will be emailed to the techincal contact. Should there be any problems either the technical or the admin contact will be informed.

For QuickSSL orders the authentication process is automatic and an email will be sent to the address specified above in stage 1. Once the simple instructions in this email are followed the certificate will be issued

For True BusinessID orders the authentication process is more complicated. If you have submitted a proper D-U-N-S number then no more infomration will be be required, however if not then you will be asked to fax GeoTrust with proof of organisation documents, these may include:

  • Articles of incorporation.
  • Certificate of incorporation.
  • Business license.
  • Partnership agreement.
  • Doing Business As (DBS) registration.
  • Sole Proprietorship documentation.
  • Internic Record

Terminology

Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

This is a digital message requesting certification for a specified common name. It holds all the information required to create your digital certificate. It contains contact information, the common name for which the signed certificate is issued and the public key of the server that will use the certificate. In the specific case of a web site, the common name is the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for your web site. This must be an exact match, for this web site the FQDN is www.spacereg.com.

An actual CSR is privacy enhanced mail (PEM) encoded and looks like this:
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----
Base 64 encoded data
-----END CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----

You can find more information on how to generate a CSR here.
You can check your certificate signing request online here.

D-U-N-S number

A D-U-N-S number is a unique nine-digit sequence recognized as the universal standard for identifying and keeping track of over 70 million businesses worldwide. It is issued for free by the D&B corporation.
